What R-Value is best for you?

What R-Value is best for your home?

The Building Code of Australia (BCA) has outlined energy efficiency provisions for new homes which include the inclusion of insulation in ceilings, walls and some floors. The value of insulation required to meet the deemed-to-satisfy provisions for energy efficiency are intended to be seen as a minimum standard – not best practice.

Step 1. Determine your climate zone from the map below.

Climate Map

Climate Zones

Zone 1   Zone 1: High humidity summer, warm winter

Zone 2   Zone 2: Warm humid summer, mild winter

Zone 3   Zone 3: Hot dry summer, warm winter

Zone 4   Zone 4: Hot dry summer, cool winter

Zone 5   Zone 5: Warm temperate

Zone 6   Zone 6: Mild temperate

Zone 7   Zone 7: Cool temperate

Zone 8   Zone 8: Alpine

Climate zones affect the levels and type of insulation. The purpose of the insulation, whether it be to keep the heat in or out (or both) will affect the R-Value required. As a general rule, climates that need to keep the heat in, require higher R-Values.

Check out Step 2 for the minimum R-Value to comply.

Note that other provisions within the BCA, such as a reduction in ceiling area insulated due to the installation of recessed down lights or other fixtures, may affect the level of insulation required. Similarly, to meet the deemed-to-satisfy provisions in the BCA other measures for energy efficiency, such as glazing requirements, must also be met.
