Choosing the right type of Insulation

To help you make an informed choice about the right type of insulation for your home, the following tables outline the key factors for consideration:

1. Product R-Value

Bradford has a range of products with various R-Values. In order to gain the best possible performance in your ceiling, it is recommended that you install R3.5 products or higher. Bradford’s High Performance range provide the highest available R-Value product in Australia – the R6.0.

2. How are glasswool batts installed?

Glasswool batts come in standard widths and lengths that match standard ceiling joist spaces. The batts are usually brought into an existing ceiling access, and fit snugly between ceiling joists to achieve maximum thermal insulation.

3. What is the price per square meter?

The installed cost will vary from house to house depending on the accessibility and clearance within the roof space. For a true indication of final cost you will need to arrange for a FREE quote with one of Bradford's Comfortchoice technicians.

4. How safe is glasswool?

Glasswool and rockwool insulation products are not hazardous products. They are safe to install and use in your home or in other insulation applications for the life of the building.

In 2002, the World Health Organisation completed more than 30 years of research, including studies on over 60,000 insulation workers, and concluded that there is no long-term serious risk to health from exposure to insulation fibres.

To further ensure the safety of our products, we changed the formulation of our glasswool and rockwool insulation in 2001 to "bio-soluble fibres". These fibres are less bio-persistent than the dust we breathe walking down the street and are not considered to pose any risk to health. You can identify bio-soluble fibres by the FBS-1 logo on our packs. For more information please go to the Insulation Council of Australia & New Zealand website.

Bradford Gold glasswool and Soundscreen rockwool are also supported by the National Asthma Council (identified through the Sensitive Choice logo).

5. Does Bradford glasswool contain toxins?

Bradford glasswool has been tested for Volatile Organic Content (including formaldehydes). In both cases for glasswool ceiling batts the results are negligible or immeasurable.

6. What are the product performance guarantees?

Bradford comprehensively tests its glasswool batts for thermal performance. For copies of test certificates and product warranties, please contact Bradford.

The products thermal performance is guaranteed for the life of the home.

7. What are the environmental benefits of Bradford products?

Bradford glasswool is made from up to 80% recycled glass content. Bradford glasswool has been assessed to contain no ozone depleting substances. For further information see our sustainability document.

8. Who checks the insulation has been installed correctly?

Bradford has quality programs in place to ensure installation is correct and meets Bradford's written installation instructions.

Bradford also carries out comprehensive training for its installers and provides all installers with a card of identification to demonstrate they have passed the training course.

9. Can insulation be installed directly on top of my plasterboard?

Yes it can, although there are some loose fill products that will exceed the weight recommendations by plasterboard manufacturers. All of Bradford's glasswool products are safe to install on plasterboard ceilings.

10. Is glasswool insulation compatible with down lights?

Bradford ceiling insulation is non-combustible. Additionally, glasswool ceiling insulation will not increase the fire load in your roof space. Care should be taken around down lights to ensure sufficient space is provided to allow transformers and lights natural ventilation to cool (required by Australian Standards).

What products and services can be provided at the same time as ceiling insulation?

Bradford provides a number of different products for existing homes, including the fitting of sub-floor insulation, roof ventilation and window and door seals. These additional energy saving and home comfort products can be quoted for at the same time as the ceiling insulation in most cases.
