The Bovis Lendlease project saw the development of a 1.2 kilometre busway, from Queens Street to Upper Roma Street in the city of Brisbane. The $333 million project commenced in June 2006 and was completed in January, eight months ahead of schedule.
Features of the busway include an underground bus station at King George Square, and a new Roma Street bus station at the Transit Centre – integrated with the Roma Street railway station. A high quality urban design, the busway also includes state-of-the-art operations such as fire and life safety systems, 24 hour security cameras, and real time information for bus travelers.
For the bus stations, the developers required strong acoustic and thermal insulation materials, with some fire resistant properties. In particular, specifications required a standard 50mm fibreglass (32kg/m3) insulation blanket behind a perforated foil facing (minimum 11%OA), insulation rating NCR1.0 and absorption at 250 Hz=1.0.
In light of the specification requirements, the decision was made for a combination of 50mm thick rockwool Fibretex 450 panels (1200mm wide x 2400mm long) wrapped in Ultraphon (black). The installation resulted in approximately 2,300m2 of insulation in the King George Square bus station, and approximately 2,000m2 of insulation in the Roma Street bus station.
Matthew Taylor, Senior Project Engineer, from Inner Northern Busway says:
“We needed the insulation to provide acoustic, thermal, and fire retardant properties, while also looking good.
“The combination of the Fibretex450 wrapped in Ultraphon was the ideal solution, recommended by David Jordan of Bradford. An added bonus of the ultraphon covering was that it was cheaper to use and better for maintenance and aesthetic appeal,” Matthew said.
